Debbie Harry’s life has been marked by both triumphs and devastating lows. She launched Blondie at 29, the band that catapulted her into the public eye with hits such as “Sunday Girl,” “Heart of Glass,” and “Atomic.”

However, she has also experienced horrific events such as being raped at knifepoint in Manhattan, claiming that Ted Bundy attempted to kidnap her, being stalked by an ex-boyfriend, being rejected by her biological mother, and using heroin to cope with her negative emotions.

In her memoir Face It, the Florida-born singer disclosed that she used heroin to “blank out parts of my life” or when she was “dealing with some depression.”

But she doesn’t gloss over these worst “parts” of her life.

Harry is candid about significant events in her life, like when she was raped while at Blondie co-founder Chris Stein’s apartment in the mid-1970s.

Despite these overwhelming experiences, the star has sought to confront them directly through therapy.

“I think therapy is a terrific way to go,” Harry expressed to Stylist.

“I recommend it highly. I don’t think you have to be in therapy forever, but I think you have to be willing to really take a good look: identify things about yourself, about your personal history.

“And I’m still discovering things. It’s kind of fascinating. Once you allow yourself to put the pieces together – really put them together, and not some kind of fantasy.”

Despite swapping heroin for therapy, the star doesn’t “really regret” using the substance.

“It [using heroin] started socially and didn’t seem so dangerous,” she said.

“There wasn’t much information and clinics weren’t readily available.

“I don’t really regret it, maybe only in terms of feeling stupid. I happened to live at that time and perhaps, if I was younger now, I’d be taking opioids to find out what they were like. I have an adventurous spirit and a curious mind.”

While Harry maintains a relaxed view of her heroin use, the drug carries severe health risks.

The drug charity Frank warns that heroin is extremely addictive, with users facing significant dangers of overdose and death.

According to the Mayo Clinic, physical dependence can develop rapidly – sometimes within just days or weeks of regular use.

When this happens, the body becomes accustomed to the drug and requires increasingly larger amounts to achieve the same high.

Attempting to quit often triggers withdrawal symptoms that can begin just hours after the last dose. These include restlessness, insomnia, vomiting, and muscle spasms.

For those grappling with depression, the Mayo Clinic suggests a variety of lifestyle modifications, including therapy and medication.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is commonly used by for mild depression, and antidepressants may also be prescribed.
