Many Kennedy Center Honor Awards viewers were forced to look away as President Donald Trump delivered a cringeworthy joke during his opening monologue at the Kennedy Center Honors.
On Tuesday, December 23, President Trump took the stage to host the 48th Kennedy Center Honors, celebrating the lifetime achievements of many in the performing arts. Actor Sylvester Stallone was one of many celebrities recognized during the coveted ceremony, as he was being presented with a special gold medallion from Trump for his five-decade career as an iconic actor, writer, and director.
But as Trump took the stage for his opening speech, many viewers at home were experiencing second-hand embarrassment as he delivered a joke that fell flat. During his lengthy speech, Trump poked fun at his friend Sylvester as he said, “Sly, you’ve been my friend for a long time. You’ve been a very special friend in so many ways. When I needed help, I knew not to go to Sly because I don’t think he would’ve been there for me.”
The camera then cut to Sylvester sitting in the audience, who did not even so much as crack a smile over the remark.
After realizing his joke didn’t land, Trump quickly pressed forward and continued, ” – but now he would. I think that after tonight, now he will. We love you Sly. It’s a big honor and congratulations to you, Jennifer, and the family. A fantastic family and a fantastic man. Thank you so much everybody.”
Some of the actor’s most well-known works throughout his acting career include his unforgettable appearances in films such as Rocky, Rocky Balboa, First Blood, The Expendables, Rambo, Creed, among many more. Stallone is also the only actor in U.S. history to appear in a successful box office movie for six consecutive decades.
Reacting to Sylvester’s appearance at the Kennedy Honor Awards, one fan wrote, “Sylvester Stallone is being honored tonight. It’s about time. The Rocky films are great. I love it. It’s about time!!! He deserves the recognition.”
Another fan added, “This Kennedy Center opening tribute to Sylvester Stallone is off the charts, and he deserves every moment of it.”
